Pilates for Movement 

What Is Pilates?

Pilates for Movement is an intelligent form of exercise. Joining mind and body is a method created to improve whole-body health. 

With a vast and varied collection of movements, Pilates builds strength, increases flexibility and allows mobility in the body. 

By becoming aware of our movement, we can therefore improve our movement quality and our physical ability.

Joseph Pilates Created Pilates in the early 19th century. Since then, the movement has gone from strength to strength, evolving alongside science and evidence-based practice.

Pilates for Movement How Is Pilates Taught?

We teach Pilates in several ways:

  • On the Mat
  • With or without small props, using many small props such as massage balls, therabands, and foam rollers to facilitate Movement.
  • Group Classes 

In addition, we also Teach

  • 1:1 Sessions I teach 1:1 client sessions at DOC, focusing on your individual needs.
  • Using specifically designed Pilates studio equipment. I teach on the studio equipment (Reformer, Trapeze Table, Combo Chair, Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel)

Pilates for Movement DNS

WHAT IS DNS?

Pavel Kolar, a Czech Physiotherapist, developed DNS. DNS is a technique based upon neurodevelopmental and rehabilitation principles. 

A significant proportion of society now suffers daily postural imbalances, dysfunction, and pain, as a result of Modern living and lifestyle choices

DNS helps restore and stabilise the functional movement patterns established during the first few years of our life. Therefore, the DNS technique is re-training our inherent movement patterns, restoring function and improving Movement and stability.

HOW IS IT TAUGHT?

Initially, there may be some testing using the breathing techniques and also some of the movements to establish which patterns of functional locomotion might need addressing for the individual. As a result, during a session, we guide clients through DNS movements deemed appropriate. 

Additionally, having taught using the DNS technique for several years, Bethia finds it a highly successful tool, alongside Pilates, in counteracting the physical demands of today’s world. 

It is a practical pathway to improving physical ability in other fields of fitness. It is an appropriate technique for use with neurological conditions that result in physical impairments.
