Awareness Improves Movement Habits

I aim to help people rediscover good quality movement strategies to support their day-to-day physical activities. I am a Movement Teacher and Craniosacral Therapist interested in understanding how the human body naturally breathes, moves and stabilises.

Getting the message across and changing the way people use their bodies is my passion. 

In my movement teaching, I use a mixture of Pilates, Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation and the Franklin Method.

Pilates was my first introduction to teaching good movement strategies. There are many valuable exercises in Pilates that I use every day to teach movement.

We first learnt to move as babies, therefore I am aware in my teaching that it is a process of rediscovery. As a result, I use Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation, a methodology developed by physiotherapists based on how babies learn to breathe, stabilise and move.

In addition, I also use the Franklin Method. Through the Franklin Method, I started to understand how to teach movement to create lasting change. This method is rich in generating felt-sense experiences primarily through the use of imagery and massage balls. As our awareness of our moving, breathing bodies improves, our ability to learn and change.

I love to learn and spend time and energy exploring the latest thinking and research into human movement.

Which class is suitable for me, and how do I join?

It is essential to start as a beginner. I teach a lot of anatomy and detailed movement strategies. It may not be the same as you have learnt in Pilates classes before.

Teaching people from scratch in a beginners class is the best option. I teach a mix of movement disciplines, so past Pilates experience is not sufficient to successfully integrate into an existing class. 

I spend the first few terms teaching beginners basic movement, breathing, and stabilising strategies. 

Once that is in place, I can add more complexity and challenge. 

It is challenging to teach the basics to one person who has just joined and complexity to long-term group members.

I am aware of the quiet, method driven, and amusing way Ruth builds our knowledge of and control over our bodies. This ability of hers stems, I think, from her deep understanding of how they work. 

Ruth also understands each person and their particular needs and can demonstrate what she wants us to do and what she does not want us to do. 

I hope to keep going into my extreme old age, which will keep getting delayed by the going!
